Golf 3 TDI: The Turbocharged Diesel Engine that Changed the Game

Volkswagen produced a limited quantity of 1000 special-edition 3 and 5 door GTI Anniversary models, celebrating 20 years of the GTI model. This had the usual GTI specification but came equipped with special checkered Recaro front sport seats and matching rear seats bearing the GTI logo, red seat belts front and rear, half-chromed and leather golf ball gear knob, red stitched leather steering wheel and handbrake gaiter. The release knob on the hand brake was also red and silver instrument dials. Floor mats also had red piping along their edges. The red theme continued externally with a red striping on the bumpers and red brake calipers. The wheels were 16" x 7" split rim BBS RS 722 alloys, visually similar to the 15" that were found on VR6 model. Also featured were brushed stainless-steel rear twin tailpipes on the exhaust and smoked front fog and indicator lamps to match the rear lamps. 3 optional extras were made available: electric sunroof, air conditioning and metallic black paintwork. Insurance was based on the standard GTI which made this version a very desirable model. The edition was sold in only 6 color schemes and the 1000 number figures that were produced was as follows: 600 8 valve models, 150 16 valve models and 250 TDI models. The diesel model was only produced for the European market and was not sold in the UK. Unfortunately, many of the models fell into the UK company car and lease market prior to the second-hand market and it believed only a few hundred still survive. However, another factor in the rarity of Mark 3 Golfs, unlike the excellent build quality of the Mark 2, at least in the UK, is the very low-quality steel sourced by VW on some occasions, and used across the range, from entry model to VR6. According to independent mechanics and parts specialists, and MOT testers, the floor-pan, both door sills, and rear hatch can suffer severe rot and disintegration, and anybody planning to buy one is advised to check for rot, and holes and patches to the floor-pan.

1997 Model Year. It came in two colors Ginster Yellow and Jazz Blue. It also had red stitching on the steering wheel, special half aluminum - half leather golf ball shift knob with GTI logo, silver gauge faces, 15" seven spoke alloy wheels made by Speedline and brake calipers painted red.[9] Most of the extras became standard on the 1998 GTI VR6 causing some confusion as to what a Driver's Edition is. The VIN can be used to confirm if a car is a Driver's Edition or not.

The first tee at Top of the Rock, located just steps from the Buffalo Bar patio, sets up a slight downhill par 3. From the first fairway, golfers can see the Chapel of the Ozarks and Jack's Cabin on the left along with sweeping views across Table Rock Lake. The first green slopes gently from left to right and is well-protected by a large oak tree on the right and bunkers along the left and right side.

Perched high atop the mountainside, golfers face a 100-foot drop to the second green and stare straight at the magnificent view of Table Rock Lake from the tee. The second green, sloped slightly from back to front, is surrounded by rhododendron flowers and other natural flowering vegetation. Golfers must pass through a unique rock tunnel to reach the back tee on this hole, where the view is well-worth the excursion.

After the last putt drops on hole two, golfers embark on a golf cart journey through flowering dogwoods and redbuds along the mountainside to reach the third tee. Number 3 is one of the most difficult holes on the course. The back tee is really elevated and golfers face a downhill shot to a green that's 30-yards deep and cut into a hillside. The green is also protected by large bunkers on both the left and right side of the green. One of the dramatic features of this hole is the huge oak tree that guards and frames the green on the right.

This island green is completely surrounded by water and fascinating rock formations. From an elevated tee, the shot must be precisely struck in order to find dry land. This hole offers a real challenge to even the most accomplished golfers.

After the island green, golfers must contend with another lake that runs in front of and along the right side of this undulated kidney-shaped green. In addition to the water hazard close to the right side, large bunkering protects the left. This is a difficult hole and par here is a good score.

"Only a handful of courses can hold your interest over time. I believe The Club at 3 Creek is one of them. The terrain demands a huge variety of shots and stances, and then nature is thrown into the mix. A moose here, a migrating flock of geese there. No two rounds are ever the same. The unexpected keeps everything fresh." - Rees Jones Known for his course designs such as Torrey Pines, Bethpage Black, Pinehurst #2, The Country Club, Bellerive, Hazeltine, Baltusrol, Medinah, Congressional and Eastlake Golf Club, Rees Jones is a true master of his craft and has established himself as a preeminent golf course designer. No other designer can boast such a portfolio. Rees is known for creating architecturally significant layouts worthy of championship competition and the course at The Club at 3 Creek is no exception
